Hair Transplant vs Micropigmentation - Which is Better?
By Milla Rosen, June 23, 2022
Surely women, in general, are the ones more concerned about their beauty and body than men. However, there is one major issue that afflicts men very commonly, and that is, the loss of hair and premature hair loss. Such issues had no solution in the past, but today there are a lot of alternatives available both for women and men. And the best thing about them is that they all are permanent. Having said that, there are different ways of addressing this issue of hair loss – both surgical and non-surgical. And today, in particular, we are going to discuss two very common permanent hair loss solutions: hair transplant and scalp micropigmentation.
What is Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is often referred to as follicular unit restoration - the process of restoring receding hairline and improving hair volume. In this process, the doctor takes hair follicles from a healthy donor site and transfers them to the area of the head, where the hair is thinning or has become bald.
The donor site is usually the back of the scalp. The area is numbed, and a small strip of tissue is taken out. Individual follicular units are then removed from the strip of the tissue, collected, and inserted in the scalp area where there is baldness and thinning. This whole process is performed after administering anesthesia.
Initially, after transplantation, the hair on the area will look stubbly, and scabs will form. The results will show clearly within three to four months. The final results will be visible once new hair starts growing.
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation is a non-intrusive alternative to hair transplantation. In this process, a small amount of pigment is added to the thinning and balding area of the head, mimicking hair follicles. It creates a natural, fuller-looking hairline. Also, scalp micropigmentation helps hair look fuller, hide scars, and elevate hair transplantation.
Some may confuse it with hairline tattooing. However, scalp micropigmentation is a bit different than body tattooing in terms of needle diameter and pigmentation, in addition to other factors.
How Painful Are The Procedures?
Hair Transplant
There is no pain in a hair transplant because the treatment is performed under anesthesia. After the procedure, the patient may face some discomfort and pain, but with the right pain management medication, that would be under control. It will hardly last for a day or two, and then you can restore your normal day-to-day work.
Scalp micropigmentation
This process is very different from hair transplantation. And in terms of pain, it varies from person to person. The majority say that it is virtually pain-free. So it completely depends on you and your level of pain tolerance. There will be no discomfort after a scalp micropigmentation procedure is complete, and you can expect to see results immediately.
Cost Of The Procedure
Hair transplantation
The cost of hair transplantation varies depending on the clinic, consultation, level of expertise, effort, and time, along with several other factors.
However, it is a bit more costly than scalp micropigmentation.
Scalp micropigmentation
The cost of scalp micropigmentation depends on the clinic you choose. But it's a way less expensive option compared to hair transplantation.
Which Hair Loss Procedure Is More Effective?
Hair Transplantation
Though a permanent solution, this procedure is clinically invasive, incisions and cuts and made – which may be visible afterward.
Micropigmentation
Scalp micropigmentation has a 99% success rate. It gives the patient fuller volume and a beautiful hairline – which is a lot easier to maintain.
Which Treatment Is Right For You?
The benefits of both hair transplantation and scalp micropigmentation depend on the needs of the patients. Some can even undergo both these procedures to enhance the results of hair transplant treatment. It gives fuller coverage and also hides the scars on the donor area.
If you are someone who doesn't want to get under the knife, scalp micropigmentation is the ideal option for you. People who have limited donor sites can also benefit from this procedure.
If you want a permanent solution and are willing to undergo surgery to physically restore the hairline and add volume to your thinning hair - go for hair transplantation without a second thought.
In short, with scalp micropigmentation, you get the illusion of hair. Whereas with hair transplantation, the lost hair is replaced with your own natural hair.
